MAKING AND MAINTAINING ICE
Outdoor ice sheets are created using Richfield's water trucks. The trucks work much faster than conventional flooding with high-volume hose. When temperatures fall low enough, City crews work to build an ice sheet, layer by layer, over a period of approximately ten days.
Rinks are maintained Monday-Friday, excluding holidays and weather permitting. Typical maintenance includes sweeping debris and spraying fresh water to form a new top layer of ice.
Warming Houses will be closed if:
- The air temperature is -10F or colder
- The wind chill index is -20F or colder
- Warm temperatures softening ice, making them unsafe for skating
- Snowfalls of more than 2" may delay cleaning the rinks and opening the warming house.
